Wilko, formally Wilkinson Hardware Stores and later Wilko Retail Ltd., was a prominent British high-street retail chain founded in 1930 by James Kemsey Wilkinson in Leicester. It specialized in homewares, textiles, DIY, cleaning products, health and beauty, stationery, confectionery, pet products, and seasonal goods, offering a wide range of products at budget-friendly prices. Headquartered in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, Wilko operated over 400 stores across the UK and employed approximately 12,500 people before its collapse. In August 2023, the company entered administration after facing significant financial difficulties and failing to secure a rescue deal. This led to the eventual closure of all its physical stores by October 2023. The Wilko brand, website, and intellectual property were subsequently purchased by rival retailer The Range (CDS Superstores International Ltd), which has since relaunched wilko.com as an online retailer. Some physical store locations were acquired by other retailers like Poundland and B&M.
Served as the central administrative and operational hub for Wilko, managing functions like buying, merchandising, marketing, finance, IT, supply chain logistics, and corporate strategy prior to its administration.
The Manton Wood site was a large, purpose-built campus reflecting the scale of Wilko's operations. It included extensive office facilities and was strategically located near one of its major distribution centers.
Historically, Wilko cultivated a work culture rooted in its family-owned origins, emphasizing value, community engagement, and a straightforward approach to retail. Employees often highlighted a sense of camaraderie. This culture effectively ended with the company's collapse.
The Worksop headquarters was significant as the nerve center of one of the UK's largest privately-owned retailers for many decades, overseeing a vast network of stores and a large workforce. It was a major employer in the Nottinghamshire region.
Wilko's primary operational presence was concentrated within the United Kingdom, where it operated its network of retail stores and distribution centers. While the company did not have international retail outlets, its sourcing and procurement functions were global, involving partnerships with suppliers and manufacturers from various countries, particularly in Asia and Europe, to stock its diverse range of products. Its direct customer-facing business and employment base were UK-centric.
