In a rush and need the TL/DR version?

Short Summary

We all have come across posts, or updates on LinkedIn that talk about trending topics, or topics of importance in your industry. When you add your two cents to these, you maintain an active presence on the platform and showcase your expertise with the discussions in your field.

Following the lead of other social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and X (formerly Twitter), LinkedIn has also come up with its own content reposting feature.

What does the repost feature do? It allows users to reshare engaging and interesting content with their followers while crediting the original creator.

You not only can share the post but also add your own insights, thoughts, or opinions to the conversation. The reposting feature is useful when you want to contribute to engaging discussions that your connections may also find interesting.

So, how to repost something on LinkedIn? Let's dive into the detailed process.

What Can You Repost on LinkedIn

If the content you want to share is public, the reposting feature is available to all users. LinkedIn allows you the flexibility to choose between posting it directly on your feed and even sending it exclusively to your connections via private messages. So, you essentially have two options depending on how you want to share the content.

There are a few important restrictions that you must remember. If the reposted content is for "Connections Only," it can't be reposted further by users outside your connections.

Content shared on LinkedIn Groups can't be reposted and shared outside these groups. So, if you find something interesting on a LinkedIn Group that you want to share with your network, you may not be able to do so.

You can repost content on LinkedIn either from your Desktop or Mobile versions.

Let's learn how to repost a post on LinkedIn from both of these versions:

How to Repost on LinkedIn from Desktop

Whether you want to repost a post from Desktop or Mobile, the process is simple and identical for both platforms. To begin:

  • You need to login to your LinkedIn account on your desktop.
  • Choose the post that you think would garner engagement and you would like to repost.
  • Click on the Repost icon that is located at the bottom of the chosen content. It will open a drop-down menu with two options.

1. Repost with Your Thoughts

This option is quite similar to the popular quote retweet option on X (formerly Twitter) that allows users to repost a tweet along with their commentary. You could ask a relevant question about the topic of the post, provide valuable insights, or even simply share your thoughts while reposting the original content.

This is how your LinkedIn profile looks if you repost with your thoughts.

When you choose to repost content with your thoughts, you can choose to further customize the repost by tagging people that you feel will benefit from it by using the "@" symbol followed by the name of the person. You can also add relevant hashtags to boost engagement and visibility.

When you reach this step of the process, you can now decide who sees your post and comment on it. There are several visibility categories that LinkedIn has to offer -

  • Anyone: If you want your post to be visible to anyone on or off the platform, you need to select this option.
  • Connections Only: This setting will only make your post visible to your connections on LinkedIn.
  • Group: You can share the post only with a specific LinkedIn Group that you are in.

You can also control who gets to engage and comment on your post:

  • Anyone: Anyone on the platform can comment on your post.
  • Connections Only: This option allows only your connections to leave comments.
  • No one: Disable comments restricting anyone from commenting on the post.

Additionally, at the top-right corner of your reposted content, you will find three dots that give you access to a few more settings for your repost. If you want to delete the post, you can select the trash icon.

2. Repost

If you do not wish to repost with added commentary, you will need to select this option to share the content directly with your connections. Once the repost is successful, you will see a new post on your feed that features the original content along with the indicator that you have shared it. All the likes and comment that shown on your linkedin profile will be of the original post. This is how it looks.

How to Repost on LinkedIn from Mobile

You need to follow similar steps for reposting from the mobile app as the desktop version. With only a few differences between the web and the mobile app, the process is simple and easy to use while you are even on the go!

  • Login to your LinkedIn account on mobile
  • Choose the post that you need to repost.
  • Click on the Repost icon that is located at the bottom of the chosen content.
  • Click Repost with thoughts or instant repost.

One distinct difference in the mobile version is that here you have the option to save a draft of your repost. For example, you choose the "Repost with Your Thoughts" option, but you realize you want to come back to it later with a few changes. You can simply tap the "X" on the top-left corner and choose "Save Draft" whenever you are ready to publish your repost.

Similar to the desktop version, the number of reposts and comments will appear at the bottom of the original post only for public content.

How to Repost on LinkedIn From a Company Page

Reposting content from your company page is simple if you are a LinkedIn Page super admin. Follow the easy steps mentioned below to repost content from a page:

  • Access the Super Admin view.
  • Switch to View as a member.
  • Once you have decided on the content you want to share, click Repost.
  • Click on the circle icon beside the name of your business page and then select Done.
  • If you wish to modify the privacy settings of your reposted content, click on the Globe icon. It will open a drop-down menu where you can choose the right audience you want to share the post with.

Why is Reposting on LinkedIn Important?

We often talk about how maintaining consistency with posting is crucial for growth on LinkedIn, but why is reposting equally important?

The answer is simple. When you repost content and add your thoughts, you not only share relevant information with your network but also showcase your unique perspective. This in turn helps in creating meaningful connections and establishing your brand's presence.

Now, does that mean reposting guarantees increased growth or reach? Unfortunately no. In addition to reposting, you need to also keep in mind other factors that will impact your engagement on LinkedIn. Reposting is a great tool for sharing content about different topics like industry updates, or job opportunities.

It is also important to note that this could also sometimes attract negative opinions, criticisms, or differing arguments. However, LinkedIn's professional nature is more likely to attract and encourage productive conversations and help you connect with new audiences.
