Lewis Paul Bremer III is an American diplomat and administrator with a prominent career in U.S. foreign policy and public service spanning several decades. He is most widely recognized for his role as the Administrator of the Coalition Provisional Authority (CPA) in Iraq from May 2003 to June 2004, following the U.S.-led invasion. In this capacity, he was the top U.S. civilian official responsible for overseeing the governance and reconstruction of Iraq during a critical transitional period. Prior to his posting in Iraq, Bremer had a distinguished career in the U.S. Foreign Service, which he joined in 1966. His notable assignments included serving as Ambassador to the Netherlands (1983-1986) and as Ambassador-at-Large for Counterterrorism (1986-1989) under President Ronald Reagan, where he played a key role in shaping U.S. counterterrorism policy. After leaving government service, he worked in the private sector, including as Managing Director at Kissinger Associates and later as Chairman and CEO of Marsh Crisis Consulting. Bremer is a graduate of Yale University (B.A.), Harvard University (M.B.A.), and the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Certificate of Political Studies). In his post-public service life, he has pursued interests including writing and painting.
