SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory operated by Stanford University. SLAC's mission is to explore the ultimate structure and dynamics of matter and the properties of energy, space, and time — at the smallest and largest scales, and with the fastest and brightest tools. Research at SLAC focuses on particle physics and astrophysics, materials and energy sciences, catalysis, and X-ray science, utilizing its world-leading facilities like the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS), the world's first hard X-ray free-electron laser.
The primary site for all research, development, operations, and administration of SLAC's scientific programs and user facilities.
Home to a two-mile-long linear accelerator (the 'linac'), the Linac Coherent Light Source (LCLS and LCLS-II), the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Lightsource (SSRL), and the future Vera C. Rubin Observatory Data Facility.
A highly collaborative and innovative research environment, bringing together scientists, engineers, and support staff from around the world. Emphasis on discovery, safety, and intellectual rigor, with strong ties to Stanford University's academic culture.
A world-renowned center for particle physics, photon science, and astrophysics research, contributing to numerous Nobel Prizes and groundbreaking scientific discoveries for over 60 years.
While SLAC's physical laboratory is in California, its scientific reach is global. It hosts thousands of visiting scientists (users) from academic, industrial, and government laboratories worldwide who utilize its unique research facilities. SLAC also participates in numerous international collaborations on particle physics experiments (e.g., with CERN), astrophysics projects (e.g., Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile), and advanced accelerator R&D.
