The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is a membership Union uniquely composed of both government and civil society organisations. It provides public, private and non-governmental organisations with the knowledge and tools that enable human progress, economic development and nature conservation to take place together. Created in 1948, IUCN has evolved into the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network. It harnesses the experience, resources and reach of its more than 1,400 Member organisations and the input of some 15,000 experts. IUCN is the global authority on the status of the natural world and the measures needed to safeguard it. Its experts are organised into six Commissions dedicated to species survival, environmental law, protected areas, social and economic policy, ecosystem management, and education and communication.
Serves as the global secretariat, coordinating IUCN's worldwide activities, policy development, and managing its vast network of members and commissions. It's the central hub for strategic planning and global conservation initiatives.
The IUCN Conservation Centre in Gland is designed with sustainability in mind, featuring energy-efficient systems, use of local and recycled materials, and integration with the natural landscape. It often hosts international conferences and workshops.
A highly international, mission-driven, and collaborative environment. Employees and experts are passionate about conservation and sustainable development, working with scientific rigor and a focus on policy impact.
Located in Geneva's international district, its Swiss base facilitates collaboration with other major international organizations, UN bodies, and diplomatic missions, reinforcing IUCN's role as a global environmental authority.
IUCN maintains a significant global presence with its headquarters in Switzerland, 8 regional offices, and numerous country offices in over 50 nations. Its strength lies in its diverse membership of over 1,400 governmental and non-governmental organizations, and a network of approximately 15,000 volunteer experts in six commissions, spanning 160 countries. Functions supported globally include biodiversity research and assessment (e.g., The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™), policy advice and advocacy, on-the-ground conservation project implementation, capacity building for environmental governance, and fostering partnerships for sustainable development and nature conservation.
